AARP , the American Association of Retired People has been running a new ad on NY Metro TV lately. It features a couple in logo-emblazoned red jackets repeating a catch-phrase, "Real Possibilities in NY" in conversation and through a bull-horn, alluding to free events. I find it annoying. For me, it falls flat for a couple of important reasons. First, there is no benefit content at all, so it feels like the kind of ads run by corporations to increase their public awareness level just before a stock offering. Second, it isn't targeted very effectively. AARP's market are retired people. People who have been around the block a few times. If you've been pitched to your whole life -- say for fifty or more years -- you know when your being pitched and can easily disregard any message if it doesn't carry direct connection with your actual life. Everything New Is Old Again!

I’m partly the odd product of trying to maintain a skillset that straddles the world of marketing and advertising design as it was in the 1970s, and today’s digital age. When I began to pursue my career in the graphic arts, I lugged examples of my work around in a big, zipper portfolio. Back home, I had a colorful collection of marker pens, mechanical lead holders and non-photo-blue pencils scattered across the top of a big sloping desk. To the side were reams of bound drawing paper, tissue, semi-transparent visualizer paper. Several small cabinets with wheels scurried about the office to serve whichever need was critical for the project at hand. In the corner stood a huge, blue, sit-down Goodkin 5B, which was a glass-backed camera of sorts, used to project a scaled image of an object or photograph from a moving focal plane/copyboard, through a tilted glass back and onto a sheet of paper. Most of us have seen similar handbills and postings from the past. Signs hung in shopkeepers windows for example, advising the reader just what kinds of people should stop in to ask about the offered job, and what kind should not bother. Even here in New York City, in the mid-1900s it was common to see signs ostracizing both Italian and Irish immigrants. Seems very strange given that those ethnicities make up large portions of modern populations here. I recall laughing as a child, seeing old tavern signs from the river towns along the Ohio, Missouri and Mississippi Rivers telling both Horse Traders and Lawyers to take their trade elsewhere. Seems that many upstanding communities simply did not wish to share their towns with such rabble. Over the past few years, there seems to be a new group of people making themselves unwelcome in the evolving communities of the internet.
